A hiking elopement in Grand Teton National Park is about as adventurous as wedding days get.
This late May elopement started with a four-mile round-trip hike to Leigh Lake, included a surprise moose sighting on the trail, vows overlooking the water beneath the Tetons, sunset portraits at Schwabacher Landing, and ended with drinks and neon-lit photos outside of Jackson’s famous Million Dollar Cowboy Bar.
To tell the story of the day, I documented everything using digital photography, 35mm film, and Super 8 video.
Why Choose Leigh Lake for a Grand Teton Elopement?
While many couples immediately think of locations like Schwabacher Landing, Colter Bay, or Mormon Row when planning a Grand Teton National Park elopement, Leigh Lake offers something those locations often can’t: privacy.
Located just past String Lake, the hike to Leigh Lake is approximately four+ miles round trip and takes couples away from the crowds that gather at many of the park’s roadside overlooks. The reward is a secluded shoreline with incredible views of the Teton Range reflected across crystal-clear alpine water.
For couples who value experience over convenience, it’s one of the most beautiful ceremony locations in Grand Teton National Park.
Hiking to the Ceremony Location
The day began at the trailhead under clear Wyoming skies. Late May is one of my favorite times for a Grand Teton elopement because the mountains are still capped with snow while the valley begins turning green for summer.
As we made our way toward the lake, we were reminded that we were sharing the park with its true residents when a moose appeared along the trail. Wildlife encounters are one of the reasons so many couples choose Grand Teton National Park for their elopement. While sightings can never be guaranteed, it’s not uncommon to encounter moose, bison, foxes, elk, or even bears throughout the park.
After safely continuing down the trail, we reached the shoreline of Leigh Lake and began preparing for the ceremony.
Changing Into Wedding Attire at Leigh Lake
Rather than hiking in their wedding clothes to the ceremony site, the couple packed their attire and changed once we reached the ceremony location.
One of the benefits of planning a hiking elopement is that your wedding day becomes an adventure from beginning to end. Instead of rushing between venues or worrying about a strict timeline, the experience feels intentional and immersive. With the Tetons rising dramatically across the water and very few people nearby, the setting felt completely private.
A First Look Beside the Water
Before exchanging vows, the couple shared a first look along the shoreline. The still water, mountain backdrop, and quiet atmosphere created the perfect setting for one of the most emotional moments of the day. These are the moments I love documenting most. There’s no audience, no distractions, and no pressure, just two people experiencing their wedding day together in one of the most beautiful places in Wyoming.
Ceremony and Portraits at Leigh Lake
With the mountains reflected across the lake behind them, the couple exchanged personal vows beside the water. The beauty of a Leigh Lake elopement is that the landscape feels untouched. Everywhere you turn there are views of alpine water, towering peaks, and endless wilderness.
After the ceremony, we spent time exploring the shoreline and creating portraits around the lake before beginning the hike back out. The combination of digital images, 35mm film, and Super 8 footage captured both the grand landscapes and the intimate moments that made the day so memorable.
Portraits at Moran Turnout
After returning from Leigh Lake, we continued exploring some of Grand Teton National Park’s most iconic viewpoints. Our first stop was Moran Turnout, one of the best locations in the park for expansive views of the Teton Range. The open landscape offered a completely different feel from the lakeside ceremony location and allowed us to create portraits that highlighted the scale of the mountains surrounding us.

Next, we stopped at Glacier View Turnout. One of my favorite things about planning Grand Teton elopements is incorporating multiple locations throughout the day. Every viewpoint offers a different perspective of the Tetons, creating a gallery that feels dynamic and adventurous. Glacier View Turnout provided dramatic mountain views and beautiful golden hour light before we headed toward sunset.
Sunset at Schwabacher Landing
No Grand Teton elopement day would be complete without a stop at Schwabacher Landing. Known for its iconic reflections of the Teton Range, Schwabacher Landing is one of the most photographed locations in Wyoming, and for good reason.
As the sun began to dip behind the mountains, golden light filled the valley and illuminated the peaks above us. The calm water reflected the landscape perfectly, creating some of the most breathtaking scenery of the entire day. This is where digital photography, film, and Super 8 truly shine. The movement of the water, the changing light, and the cinematic mountain backdrop create imagery that feels timeless.
Ending the Night at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar
Instead of ending the day after sunset, the couple wanted one final adventure. We made our way into downtown Jackson and finished the evening at the iconic Million Dollar Cowboy Bar.
After spending the day surrounded by wilderness, the western atmosphere of Jackson provided the perfect contrast. Neon lights and a lively downtown energy gave the final portraits a completely different feel from the mountain landscapes we had photographed all day.
It’s one of my favorite ways to end a Grand Teton elopement, combining the adventure of the national park with the character and charm of Jackson Hole.
